The lists of awards won by Marianne Carlson of Jefferson at the 2017 Iowa State Fair is getting longer.
Carlson won first place and $75 cash in the Whole Grain Breads with Red Star Platinum yeast competition judged Aug. 17. Entries were judged on shape, crust, texture and flavor.
She also placed first and won a $100 cash award in the 75th Anniversary Dessert competition judged Aug. 16. Contestants were challenged to create an award worthy cake to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the city of Windsor Heights. Entries were judged on taste and presentation.
In the Midwest Living Cookies competition judged Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug 15-16, Carlson earned second place overall and a $150 cash award. Entries were judged on flavor, texture and appearance. She placed first in the bar cookies, three-layer bars other than named class.
On Wednesday, Aug. 16, Carlson competed in the Egg-Ceptional Eggs cooking contest. She took third place in the deviled eggs class. Judges were looking for flavor, appearance, presentation, texture, and ease of preparation.
Greene County also had youth livestock winners. In the FFA breeding beef show held Aug. 17, C.J. Muir showed the champion shorthorn heifer.
And in adult livestock competition held Aug. 12, Muir Farms of Rippey placed second in the Foundation Simmental purebred breeding heifer class, third in the registered Maine-Anjou market steer class, and third in the registered Simmental market steer class.
Hughes Cattle Company of Bagley placed second in the Class 5 commercial breeding heifer and fourth in the registered Chianina market steer class. Troy Stanley of Bagley placed first in the registered Maine-Anjou market steer class. The steer was judged champion among Maine-Anjou market steers. Stanley shoed the third overall market animal.
